Maida Muhidin Dhiblawe: “No one can ignore the achievements and the role of an educated woman”

Radio Mogadishu which is a branch of the ministry of information, culture and tourism of Somalia’s federal government has appointed a female journalist, Maida MuhidinDhiblawe as the head of human resourcedepartment of the federal government-run radio station in Somali capital.

Maida who was born and bred up in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia graduated from the faculty of public administration at the University of Somalia (UNISO) in Mogadishu.

Since joining media in 2013 while in high school, Maida worked with different radio stations among them radio Dalsan, Shabelle, Radio Maanta and Benadir as reporter and presenter. In December 2017, she joined the government-run radio and worked as a news anchor and producer since mid-2020 when she appointed as the head of human resource department of the radio.

“I am happy with the new position I was trusted with. I believe it is a new dawn that will bring to an end the unfavorable gender-based traditions that go against women rights” Dhiblawe added added, “Education is the only platform that can promote the role of women in media. The reality is that no one can ignore the achievementsand the role of an educated woman”

The human resource departments of most organizations in Somalia is lead and dominated by male who belief that it is tough job that cannot be handled by female, but Maida’s new appointment will prove that argument wrong.

In her new role, Maida will be responsible for the smooth running of organization’s human resource department. She will supervise, direct and coordinate the administrative functions of the department. She will also provide consultation to management on staffing plans, compensation, benefits, training and development.

“I will work hard to advocate for the rights of women so that they get equal rights with male counterparts- like separate toilets, prayer and dressing rooms, consider and follow up their complaints, plan their special leaves like maternity and so on” said Maida.

Maida becomes the first female head to lead one of the various departments of radio Mogadishu since established during colonial period in Italian Somaliland.

Yahye Ali Farah, the director of radio Mogadishu said the management is committed to encourage the competent female journalists through promotions, salary increment in a bid to cherish their efforts.

“We know female journalists are under represented in media and other agencies in public and private. As government-run radio, we would like to be role model through promotion of skilled and hardworking women journalists”, added the director.

“This will be a trend that has started and it will not be confined to female journalists only, but it will be a measure to every hardworking employee who does his/her work excellently without discrimination”

Radio Mogadishu was one of the media across Somalia that signed the gender declaration driven by Somali Women Journalists Organization in collaboration with IMS-FOJO.

This promotion of the female journalist and the implementation of the other principles of the document by the agency came as a result of the continued advocacy and campaign by Somali women Journalists Organization to push forward gender equality in Somali media.

SWJO has had continuous meetings aimed to follow up the adoption of the declaration with the media directors. Similarly, the organization has conducted a number of trainings that build the professionalism, understanding, awareness and knowledge of Somali female journalists on gender parity. The overall objective of the declaration was to encourage and challenge media organisations to develop gender sensitive approaches in their operations including and not limited to recruitment, promotion, remuneration, leave, elimination of all forms of violence and sexual harassment.
