Somali female journalists encouraged to embrace modern TV and Radio writing styles

Mogadishu, December 17: An intensive four-day training for 17 Somali female journalists on Broadcast writings (TV & Radio), supported by United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and implemented by Somali Women Journalists (SWJ), ended today. The participants were drawn from Mogadishu, Southwest and Hirshabelle regional states. They were taught key topics like scriptwriting, interview skills, social media, ethical journalism and news sources. 

Farhia Mohamed Kheyre, Chairperson, Somali Women Journalists (SWJ) said in her opening speech, “we want this training to lead girls into a positive direction. We expect them to move away from the traditional reporting style and adopt modern TV and Radio reporting methods.”

Maryama Sheikh Abdi from Jowhar, who is among the 17 participants, said that she is delighted to have attended this training and has benefited a lot compared to what she knew before. “After the training, I will be able to pass the knowledge I have gathered during the training to other girls in Hirshabelle state,” she added.

The training was very interactive, and its contents were crucial for the female trainees since it will benefit them in their respective fields and enable them to practice modern forms of writings for TV and Radios. According to the trainer, Ahmed Ali Mohamed, the trainees were so enthusiastic about learning, and they asked different questions about every topic they learn. 

Another participant, Shukri Ismail Ahmed from Southwest state said, “I have long been waiting to have training on Radio and TV script writings. In the regions, we don’t get as much training hence participating in this training is important to me”. 

During the closing ceremony, Ari Gaitanis, UNSOM Spokesperson, joined the event via video call and express that the UN is keen and happy to help develop the skills of Somali female journalists. “The United Nations is pleased to support this training, and we will be supporting it again next year. We want to see more female journalist undertaking different roles in the Somali media,” he said. 

This training on Broadcast Writings (TV and Radio) is among many trainings conducted by SWJ to strengthen the capacity of female journalists in every regional state and empower them to excel in the male-dominated media industry.
