Garowe, Puntland — December 23, 2025
The Somali Women Journalists Organization (SWJO), in partnership with International Media Support (IMS), today launched the final installment of its nationwide workshop series on Enhancing Gender Balance in Media Content. The three-day training brings together journalists, producers, editors, and presenters from leading media houses across Puntland.

As the concluding chapter of SWJO’s multi-region initiative, the Garowe workshop carries particular significance. Participants opened the day with candid reflections on the current state of media representation in Puntland and the role of journalists in shaping public narratives. Discussions highlighted how sourcing practices, editorial routines, and newsroom culture influence the visibility and portrayal of women in daily content.
The training combines theory with hands-on practice, including script reviews, sourcing exercises, and the introduction of the SWJO Gender Tracking Tool—a practical mechanism for monitoring and improving gender balance in media outputs. This tool has been piloted in several media houses across the country and is now being introduced to Puntland journalists for adoption in their editorial processes.

Speaking at the launch, SWJO Chairperson, Farhia Kheyre, emphasized the importance of strengthening inclusive journalism as Somalia prepares for rapid political, social, and humanitarian developments. The Garowe workshop provides a platform for media professionals to exchange challenges, explore solutions, and collectively commit to more responsible and representative reporting.
Over the next three days, participants will analyze common gaps in content production, explore gender-sensitive storytelling methods, and learn how to embed inclusive practices into newsroom decision-making.
The workshop will conclude on 25 December 2026, with invited keynote remarks from Hon. Maryan Axmed Cali, Minister of Women and Family Affairs of Puntland, marking a milestone moment in collaborative efforts to strengthen gender equity in Somali media.
