The management of Mustaqbal radio has appointed ZamZam Mohamed Ali as the deputy director of the radio. The 25-year-old female journalists was born and bred in Mogadishu. ZamZam has a degree in public administration from Himilo University in Mogadishu.
She joined media in 2015 and worked with different media stations as a reporter and producer. Before her recent promotion as the deputy director of the radio, Ali served as the head of digital media of the radio where
Reacting to the news of her appointment, Zamzam said she was deeply moved: “For all my colleagues, especially the female journalists at Mustaqbal radio, this represents an important sign of recognition of the role of female journalists”
She sent her personal thanks and the gratitude to the management for having chosen her to this important task.
“ZamZam says: “It’s a real honour to become the deputy director of Mustaqbal radio. As a journalist, it is unbelievable responsibility to lead this demanding position.I guarantee my full commitment to execute my duties effectively and professionally.
Ahmed Gutale, the director of Mustaqbal radio highlighted during the appointment, “I am sure that ZamZam, who has been working with Mustaqbal radio for many years, and whose professionality has always been appreciated, will make a fundamental contribution to the production of the radio”
The directorexpressed his welcome to ZamZam saying that the experience she has gained in years of service to the radio are extremely valuable assets for this new position.
“Seven months ago, we have appointed Ali to the position of digital head of the radio, she performed her duties meticulously- this encouraged the management to promote her to a higher position in the management”
In this new role, ZamZam will provide clear direction and take day-to-day responsibilities for the management of the radio team. She will also take care of the business, technicaland administrative aspects of a radio station.
According many, the appointment of female journalists including Ali to decision-making positions will not onlyproduce more balanced coverage but also means of gaining women’s protection.
A good number of female journalists join Somalimedia industryevery year, but very few manage to reach higher positions. There are few female editors and directors in over 30 radio and TV stations in Somalia.
Most of the management jobs are occupied by men, this is a serious obstacle to gender equality within the media, but Mustaqbal’s decision to promote a female journalist to one of the higher positions of the radio is a commendable job worth emulated.
