Somali Journalists Attend Gender Equality Training in Mogadishu

20 journalists, 15 women and 5 menare taking part in a 3-day training organized by the Somali Women Journalists Organization (SWJO), in partnership with IMS-FOJO.

The aim of the training is to build the journalists’ understanding, awareness and knowledge on gender parity in terms of recruitment, salaries, promotions and access to capacity development opportunities.

The journalists attending the gender equality training were selected from the different media houses in Mogadishu.

The deputy chairperson of SWJO, Nasrin Mohamed Ibrahim who opened the training said that the workshop is aimed to ensure that women journalists have same rights with their male counterparts and create a conducive workplace without violence.

“We are committed to promote and protect gender equality at media houses by questioning and defeating the traditions that restrict the equality in workplace” said Nasrin, the deputy chairperson of Somali Women journalists Organization.

Hafsa Khalif, a female journalist among the training participantssaid she expects to gain valuable insights that will boost her gender equality skills so as to know her rights and obligations.

Also, Noor Abdirahman Noor among the trainees who echoed the sentiments of Hafsa urged Somali women Journalists Organization in collaboration with IMS-FIJO to increase and conduct similar training so as to build the awareness of journalists, especially women journalists and media leaders.

During the first day of the workshop which opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday, the participants were taken through important topics such as the responsibilities of female journalists in championing the gender equality in the workplace, identifying stereotypes against women appropriate responses and fair representation of women in the media among others.

The objective of that training is not to just support women journalists rise in positions of power and decision-making but teach them the value of women as journalists and how they should not be abused because of their gender.
