On 27th April 2018 the second part of the workshop that started on 26th took place whereby the concern on human resource was reviewed.
The platform was opened with a word of prayer by one of the members.
In our previous topic on sexual harassment in Baidoa was mentioned that the outcome was so positive and the major problem was the society seconded by the parents.
The main objective that was covered here was that,since the ladies are few in the field,how are they paid,do they have their rights respected and are they promoted from the positions they hold on to at the moment.
In the sector of the equal payment,was found out that the ladies are paid less since they are few and they don’t do as much work as the men,the reason being there is no capacity building for the ladies in the field of media in that region.
Their rights are considered in the sector of the leave rights only for the maternity leave but no payment during that period and confirmed to us that after the leave she can continue her work but no salary during that process for the private media sectors. For the government sectors there is salary payment during that leave.
The lady journalist is not promoted from her certain position, the reason being that they are not fully equipped since the few that are in the field majority do the work secretly due to the family and society fear.
That gives them no time to build themselves from the position they are. This encourages the women journalist to form a committee of women journalists and media managers implementing the Gender Respect Declaration.
In groups of six members the contracting was discussed in the media sectors. There was an agreement on, for the Government media houses there is a policy written but no contracts are written down for the journalists before joining the field.
For the private sector, no policy and contract written down but done verbally before the individual joins.
The groups decided to bring up solutions that can be undertaken to at least bring a change;
• Awareness to be created mostly for the society. Very powerful campaigns to be hosted for the society.
• Somali Women Journalist Organization to form a branch at least to support the women Journalist and advocate for them from the society and be an example to the fellow ladies.
• To produce Gender respect declaration for the media house and media workers.
• To host trainings based on capacity building for the women journalist in that region.
The day has been a fruitful and the program was an appreciated one by the crowd and the leaders too who did the closing for us, the Mister of Information who closed with a word of appreciation for SWJ bringing up this kind of workshop together with the partners FOJO/IMS who made it possible.
