DHUUSAMAREEB, SOMALIA- 2nd January, 2023- Somali women journalist organization (SWJO) in partnership with United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) begins a three day workshop training on trauma for more than 40- prominent journalists drawn from the various media houses in Dhuusamareeb, Somalia.
Participants had an in-depth knowledge in different sessions on trauma, conflict-sensitive reporting as well as post-traumatic stress disorder on the first day. On the second day, Journalists will learn a great deal of emotional management, covering trauma stories (terrorism, drought and famine, suicides etc.), and interviewing trauma victims as well. And on the last day of the training, attendees will cover stress management, journalists’ resilience and peer support, personal reflections of the journalists in covering trauma stories, and finally counselling sessions will be given to journalists.
Run Mohamud, SWJO’s representative in Galmudug state opened the event and welcomed the trainees to the workshop while highlighting the importance of the training for the practices of journalism in the state, particularly, the intensification of fighting in the region.
Minister of information of Galmudug, Abshir Abdi has made an opening remarks as well stating journalists have been at the frontline of the most traumatic events that happen in our country for the last thirty years and I believe this training will be very helpful for the journalists to do their jobs well. Journalists have the power to change the society for the better in short time period and this state needs just that, he added.
SWJO believes the training will develop journalists’ awareness of the complexity of survivors’ trauma (tic) experiences and understand the impact of the traumatic events on themselves and their audiences as well as helps the journalists to make better, more ethical news choices when covering traumatic events next time.
