SWJO HOLDS THREE DAY TRAINING ON TRAUMA FOR SOMALI JOURNALIST

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA- 15TH November, 2022- Somali women journalist organization (SWJO) holds a three day workshop training on trauma for journalists in Mogadishu. More than forty prominent journalists drawn from the various media houses in Mogadishu attended the workshop.

During the 3-day training workshop, the participants will have an in-depth knowledge required to cover the traumatic events, psychological wounds from covering traumatic events such as terror incidents and journalist killings are difficult to recover from. As a result, Somali journalists must be prepared and informed about the consequences of covering such events on their lives.

Leylo Osman, SWJO’s executive who opened the event welcomed the trainees to the workshop while highlighting the importance of the training. “The trauma affects all journalists, male and female alike, and is not limited to female journalists; we as SWJO team feel have the responsibility to train journalists who lack the knowledge and skills required to cover traumatic events” added Leyla.  

SWJO believes the training will develop journalists’ awareness of the complexity of survivors’ trauma (tic) experiences and understand the impact of the traumatic events on themselves and their audiences as well as helps the journalists to make better, more ethical news choices when covering traumatic events next time.
