SWJO’s chairperson, Farhia kheyre, meets the speaker of the Somali parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madoobe.

Mogadishu, Somalia– Somali Women Journalists Organization’s Farhia Kheyre had a meeting with the speaker of the Somali parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe on Monday evening to discuss issue related the media law.

Ms. Kheyre shared with the speaker that SWJO has conducted a numerous high level roundtable discussion across the country, in 2022, with media stakeholders in bid to present concerns and be validated- the media law,- signed by president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo in 2020. Those concerns include the inadequacy of gender and women rights in the law as well as widespread use of ambiguous language on the issue of freedom, censorship and power of the government.  SWJO has documented the concerns from media stakeholders and will organize other media stakeholder meetings with media law experts to address to issues at length.

Ms. Kheyre has appealed to the speaker the urgent need to amend the law once more, starting a meeting with communication and media committee of the parliament and media stakeholders. The speaker welcomed the idea and promised to help all he can on those issues.
