A training on covering sexual assaults and rape cases organized and implemented by Somali Women Journalists Organization (SWJO) and funded by UNICEF opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
The three-day training that will be held from April 6 to April 8, 2021 attracted 20 female journalists selected from different media stations in Mogadishu
At the opening of the training, Nasrin Mohamed Ibrahim, the deputy chairperson of Somali Women Journalists Organization welcomed the participants and the facilitators to the training.
She briefed the participants about the training programme and thanked them for their commitment to attend the training.
Miss Nasrin urged the participants to take advantage of the training and learn skills that will help them cover the sexual assaults and rape cases which is a sensitive topic in the context of Somalia.
“ This is an important training that will enhance the skills of the female journalists when covering the sexual assaults and rape cases professionally. This is a sensitive issue that needs you to put much attention. I hope the training will add value to your way of reporting and I encourage you to grasp the opportunity so as to further your professionalism” said Nasrin.
Naima Abdisalan among the training participants expressing her joy of attending this important workshop said the programme came the right time when the journalists especially women journalists lack the required skills to report and cover this sensitive topic.
“ This is the first time I attend such a training and it is my sincere wish we will gain valuable skills that will help us cover sexual assaults” said Abdisalan.
At present, crimes of sexual assault and rape cases go vastly under reported and perpetrators continue undetected. The goal of the Training program is to strengthen the capacity of journalists to provide effective reporting about the crime without harming the victims of sexual assault.
This is the first time such a joint workshop organized by Somali Women Journalists Organization in collaboration with UNICEF was held in Mogadishu.
