Somali women journalists’ organization in partnership with US-embassy in Mogadishu holds a graduation ceremony to celebrate 22 female journalist graduates trained on enhancing video editing and graphic designs at international compound (IC) at the embassy.
Representatives from media, civil society members, government officials and US embassy officials have attended the ceremony.
Farhia Mohamed Kheyre, SWJO’s chairperson has opened the ceremony thanking the attendees and congratulating the graduates of the training. In her opening remarks, Ms. Kheyre, underlined the importance of the training and how it will improve the content created by the female journalists and its impact on society. She went on encouraging the journalists to utilize this skill and be force of change.
US embassy’s Taylor Tiney, deputy head of mission, congratulated the female journalist graduates. “The perspectives and voices of women to be heard is vital for democracy and social change and United States stands firmly with the journalists and assists building their capacity” he states in his remarks.

Abukar Albadri, International media support’s representative has praised the courage and resilience of Somali female journalists and voiced this new skill will improve their profession. However, he added this only training is not enough for the need to upskill female journalists.
Members of civil society, representatives of media houses have also congratulated the journalists and underlined the importance of conducting such trainings.

Some of graduates spoke at the event and expressed their appreciation for the training and promised to use the skill they have learned to advance women’s voices and betterment of society.
