Saturday, 13 July 2024. Mogadishu, Somalia. Somali Women Journalists Organization (SWJO) in Partnership with International media support (IMS) concludes two-day workshop, 10-11, July in Mogadishu, on becoming an ally, agent and leader for gender parity. 40 media house representatives, directors, editors, reports – both male and females -, attended the two-day workshop.
Participants were presented the highlights of gender disparity / inequality and discussed its impacts in Somali media. On first day, Sessions were talked about allyship in the context of gender parity and steps to becoming an effective ally. On the second day, sessions commenced with in-depth presentation and group discussion on creating inclusive media content and techniques and strategies of becoming leading change and promoting gender parity.
Participants have underscored their commitment to advocating and becoming leaders of change in respective media houses and their platforms. In addition to that, they have draft action plans and recommendation in advancing gender parity in Somali media.

SWJO’s vice chairperson, Leyla Osman, in her closing remarks thanked the participants for their candid discussions. Ms. Leyla further underlined the importance of gender parity in Somali media and that is time that every media practitioner to be an agent of change and promote parity not just as good thing for the betterment of the society, but also good media business.
SWJO has organized seminars, workshops and debate forums in purpose of advocating women’s rights in media over the years.
