Mogadishu, Somalia – Today marks the launch of an impactful 3-day workshop aimed at enhancing the capacities of journalists on gender mainstreaming and addressing issues of sexual harassment in Somalia. This workshop, organized in partnership with UNESCO, has brought together 25 media practitioners, including reporters, editors, and producers of both genders.
The event commenced with an inspiring opening address by Leyla Osman, the deputy chairperson of the Somali Women Journalists Organization (SWJO). She underscored the crucial importance of this training and outlined its primary objectives. Firstly, the workshop aims to address the prevailing gender disparity in media content and within media organizations, where journalists do not have equal opportunities. Secondly, it seeks to equip male journalists with the skills necessary to self-regulate and effectively address gender-related issues. Finally, the training aims to chart a path forward for a more inclusive and equitable media landscape in Somalia.
Renowned media and gender expert, Abdi Moallim, facilitated the day’s four comprehensive sessions. The first day’s agenda was meticulously designed to cover several key topics. The initial session focused on Gender Equality in Media, emphasizing the importance of equal representation and opportunities in the media industry. This was followed by a session on Gender Sensitivity in Journalism, which aimed to develop skills among journalists to report on gender issues with greater sensitivity and fairness.
Next, the workshop addressed Gender Bias in Media Workplaces, identifying and tackling the biases that exist within media organizations. The day’s sessions culminated in an inspiring Panel Discussion on Personal Experiences in Tackling Gender Bias, providing a platform for participants to share their personal experiences and strategies in combating gender bias in the media industry.
This workshop in Mogadishu is just the beginning. The training will also be conducted in other key regions across Somalia, including Dhuusamareeb, Kismayo, Garawe, and Xudur. By expanding the reach of this important training, we are collectively taking significant steps towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable media environment in Somalia.
