SEXUAL EXPLOITATION DURING EMOLOYMENT,WORK PLACE AND NEWS ROOMS

On 6th May in Garowewe hosted the first workshop.

The opening was done by the chairperson of Somali Women Journalist, Farhiya Mohamed Kheyre. She welcomed and appreciated the crowd for taking off their busy schedules to be part of the workshop.

The presence of the state minister in the Ministry of Informaton,  AbdifatahNurAshkir, the deputy minister in the ministry of women, Faiza Ismail Ali and the chairperson of Media Association in Puntland, was really a great pleasure, showing us the respect and motivation to move forward.

Our main objective was what kind of sexual harassment the women journalist undergo in this region.

The ladies declared that they don’t have written policy that states the kind of work they should do thus enhancing them to be overworked and undergo a lot of pressure.

They came to an agreement whereby due to the pride the certain community has, even if a lady is asked out for her dignity, she cant speak out to the society or mention it to the public,she rather quit the job or go ahead with her problem.

The certain community living in Puntland has got levels and too much pride which sometimes helps the ladies for the men cant ask for her dignity in the easy way due to the families being known, thus holding back the men for they are scared to be mentioned to the families.

We discussed in groups the reason it changed unlike the years before; the reason being;

  • Awareness has increased thus making the upcoming lady journalist to know what she is capable of.
  • The community became more understanding and the lady journalist are encouraged, motivated and considered.
  • The believe of the society has changed way more

We also discussed what can be done to solve the small problems still existing in the media field.

  • Capacity building
  • The ladies to be able to speak up and let alone the pride and norms in the area.
  • Training to be held for the management in the media so as to fairly distribute and manage work at the stations.
