SWJO holds extraordinary events to celebrate International Women Day.

Somali Women Journalists Organization held remarkable events in Mogadishu and Beledweyn in Partnership with United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) to celebrate International Women’s Day. Media practitioners, government officials, and civil society representatives were among the attendees.

Ari Gaitanis, UNSOM’s chief communications and spokesperson, congratulated female journalists on this special day in his opening remarks and underlined female journalists’ role in promoting literacy, peace, and harmonious coexistence within the Somali context.

The opening remarks was followed a presentation that summarized the status of women in media and highlighted some of the recent work SWJO has conducted that had a pivotal role in advancing gender parity in Somali media.

Afterwards, a panel of media experts had an insightful debate on the status of women in media and challenges the face within the society and in the media houses. The renowned and veteran media panelists have further outlined solutions to tackle those challenges.
